Criterion Channel - Nordic Noir
The Criterion Channel is wonderful, isn't it? They have a series this month on Nordic Noir, consisting of four films and directors I had never heard of. This is very rare for me. And gives me hope.
I have only dipped my toe but the fist, Girl with Hyacinths, (pictured, above, one of many random striking, similar compositions), directed by Hasse Ekman, has everything one requires from a noir (a man takes on the investigation of a mysterious suicide) dipped with a bitter chocolate coating of Swedish angst. If your only exposure with Swedish film is Bergman (who, to be fair, was a Noirish as it got at times) or Sjostrom, these seem very much worth checking out. Will contribute a deeper dive when I have the chance.
